Inspired by my poem “They Hold Me Tight,” I want to recreate my “white room,” a safe space I retreated to during panic attacks or overwhelming moments. Inspired by Kara Walker, this piece will feature life-sized cutouts of my aunt and great-grandmother, silhouetted against white sheets. This cove embraces the viewer with white sheets around the entire area, and on the outside there will be white clothes, but they will be tattered and ruined as if someone wanted to get in. On the inside, it will be completely pure, with only a table with headphones and a chair. Audio recordings of mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and just women's voices will be playing, sharing snippets of encouraging messages.
